Mamelodi Sundowns Legend Announces Retirement

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder, Hlompho Kekana, has announced his retirement from professional football.

The 37-year-old confirmed the news on Tuesday, 2 August via a statement posted on Twitter. He spoke at length about his passion for the beautiful game, and he also thanked his family, friends, fellow players, and fans for supporting him over the years.

“It’s been an enjoyable journey, filled with so many highlights,” he wrote. “My experiences from the day I left home as a kid up to now, has [sic] played a role in shaping the person I am. And hopefully my journey can inspire the next generation.”

Kekana’s journey first began in 2004 when he signed with Black Leopards. After going back and forth with several Premier League Soccer clubs, he joined Mamelodi Sundowns in 2011.

There, he scored 28 goals in 235 appearances; he also captained Masandawana to winning the 2016 CAF Champions League and the 2017 CAF Super Cup, among other multiple championships.

Kekena will now embark on a career as a television football pundit. We wish him the best of luck!
